Nice Things To Say On A Friend's Wedding

Journal

ANOTHER YEAR / A BALCONY ON THE SEA / ARMADILLO / PRESIDENT / MYSTERIES OF LISBON

The Christmas period is conducive to the outputs of all kinds. Here is a selection of feature visible during the holidays.

start with "the great forgotten Cannes Film Festival" according to many newspapers, the aptly named Another Year Mike Leigh an ordinary year in the life of an ordinary couple with people who are a little less. Since Secrets and Lies , we like the humanistic bias of Mike Leigh knows that portray characters in their vulnerability and their distress at never forgetting a hint of humor here and there. This time the filmmaker has no major story (new motherhood, abortion), he filmed bewildered beings who will find Tom and Gerry (nice find!) The comfort expected. A couple like you see more, peaceful, sincere, loving after thirty years together. Their family life is as uneventful. The filmmaker does not affect that well-regulated life but slightly disrupts the peripheral characters who revolve around them. Lesley Manville, a faithful of the director, portrays an alcoholic and Mary dropped, finds its place nowhere. Tom's brother, handsome taciturn character, brings the gravity in the film falsely gay. Mastery of staging, interpretation suitable actors, Another Year is a well-oiled mechanics of the seasons. Refusing dramatization, Mike Leigh films the passing time with a precision and economy of every moment, but nothing new in his filmography.

A balcony overlooking the sea should give the beloved Jean Dujardin his great dramatic role. Alas, the actor, pretty good, not save the new movie with Nicole Garcia. The filmmaker has been more inspired we wanted to run too many things at once: the forgotten children, the thriller hitchockien , the identity crisis. She lost in the meanders of a past that he is Algerian staff (she was born there) without the involvement we feel sufficient. Rest of beautiful images of Oran in the morning, a disturbing interpretation of Marie-Josee Croze and successful passages. But, with explanatory flashbacks winded dialogues, the director never finds the right tone. After the mediocre Charlie Says , Nicole Garcia is definitely a bad pass.

Grand Prix of the Semaine de la Critique at Cannes Armadillo is a documentary impact on young conscripts Danish parties in Afghanistan. From the first sequence, very "Hollywood," have doubts about the veracity of the images. Following confirmation of such unpleasant impression of manipulation. Like a good script that recalls the excellent Jarhead, the soldiers are bored and then, after losing one of their own, are pleased by running the Taliban. Tendentious, highly ambiguous, the film can be seen as a clear pro-militarist particularly unpleasant. Without opinion, the director Janus Metz follows his men in the middle of a quagmire and as if the film featured. Aesthetic, this "fake" documentary makes no geopolitical perspective on a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives even if we can see the widening gap between soldiers and people, first victim of the Taliban. Much to see or Minesweeper review s Kathryn Bigelow did not bother to psychological considerations, but proved devilishly effective.

No feeling Diversion in contrast to the vision of great literature Yves Jeuland President devoted to Georges Freche died last October. The former president of the Languedoc-Roussillon had agreed to be filmed without any right to inspect the final assembly. A rare initiative that allows the director to paint a picture of this cruel and incisive maverick. Always a good distance from his subject, or not yielding to convenience or ease, Jeuland Frêche films and his entourage on the campaign trail. In the storm of his statements questionable Fabius, the Harkis and black team France, Frêche proves to be a "killer" as he himself admits, daunting and affable populist at times, themselves as the victim of a Socialist Party that was excluded. The director shows most local political mores that have nothing to envy to those of our national tenors. In a chilling sequence, probably the most important films Jeuland Frêche and his court eating, drinking, carousing where "the President" admits to having lied about his father at a rally to stir the crowd. Cynicism, manipulation, power seem then that the only engines of men desperate to stay in place. Advisers Communication obsessed by the image of their master reporters seduced by this iconoclastic President is the authentic portrait of a king Almighty. Essential.

Finally, we can not end this review without mentioning briefly the Prix Louis Delluc 2010, one of the most prestigious French film awards, given to Mysteries Lisbon Raul Ruiz. Filmed mostly in Portuguese, the film intersect an abbot confidant, a countess injured, a marquis as mocked and other characters gravitating through the ages. In an impressive narrative virtuosity, the Chilean filmmaker takes us on this romantic drama with a duration of 4:25! (Admittedly a bit long). Atypical project in the world cinema scene, Mysteries Lisbon deserves to lose because the elegance and sophistication of the staging we offer beautiful caskets. But we regret that the director has not pushed his more formal experiments as he had known so well in his beautiful adaptation of Proust, Time Regained . If you can not find on the big screen, the number rooms are very limited, you can catch up soon which will broadcast on Arte television version of six hours! A word to the wise.

Sympathy For The Loss Of A Mother Images

Tuesday after Christmas

A man and a woman in a bed. From the first shots, we guess a couple prohibited. He is married with one little girl of eight years. She is a dentist in Bucharest, single. An adulterous relationship as we have seen a thousand times to the movies. But it is signed by a young Romanian film which is the second feature. And in recent years, we know this film quick to shake up the established codes.

Yet the impression of banality never leaves the film by Radu Muntean. Sequence clean, a slow, cool decor, it does not feel the filmmaker disrupt the norm of the classic psychological drama. But so far remains Bergman, the director comes to creating an odd thriller based on a simple question: Will he leave his wife? The answer lies in a startling sequence in which the duration of rupture planes almost excessive gives an impressive power. The filmmaker does nothing dramatizes the everyday and the subject then turned to his advantage.

But as in Crime, Adjective released some months earlier, it no longer receives the salt that made the specificity of the Romanian cinema . Singularity, the wry humor, the shift we were in such wonderful works Death of Mr. Lazarescu or 12:08 East of Bucharest seem to have disappeared. If the filmmakers still permeate the retina, they now fall into a mold further agreed. The festivals are probably no strangers to this trend, systematically selecting these features in major competitions, so they are not all rise their artistic pretension. A movement that we hoped would bounce back.

Real lies

One morning, Emily receives a vibrant love letter anonymously. Unresponsive, she throws the paper in the garbage under the astonishment of John, his employee, the secret author of this passionate statement. Sad to see her depressed mother since her husband left, she decided to send the said letter, hoping to save her from her grief. She can not imagine that his gesture will be the beginning of a continuous series of misunderstandings.

Pierre Salvadori has always set a goal dear to his master Lubitsch: reveal the truth of the characters through their lies. Do not see this movie as a plagiarism or even a tribute to filmmaker T o Be Or Not To Be . If mastered the mechanics of comedy, Salvadori, in writing at least its own style. Aided by its writer Benoit Graffin, has developed a clever architecture misunderstandings to meet together with an innate sense of rhythm. Based on a delicious trio, the story is heavily loaded with characters who each have a real thick. Audrey Tautou, wanting to do good, shall be guilty of cowardice, even cruel at times. Nathalie Baye, neglected wife, finds a new life in an illusory and deceptive love and will eventually reveal itself in one day unexpected vision. As for Sami Bouajila, the polite young man and cultivated it in early will give way to a manipulative character in turn.

True Lies has rare quality in the French comedy : charm. Fleeing all verismo, Salvadori dedicated to making probably the most incongruous situations, and it follows, amused, this delightful boulevard theater where the right words without being an ordinary signature, all have their place, where the decor a bit outdated allow characters to evolve.

If his production does not always live up to its plot, the director gives us some nice visual moments, like when Nathalie Baye learns the truth when he saw the couple in Bouajila-Tautou silhouette. And to look more closely, the film shows cheerfully transgressive no one escapes the evil or wickedness. This tasty entertainment makes us believe that there are authors who still have a high regard for the construction screenplay, working hard to ensure that all is harmonious and elegant. Such a requirement is welcome!

Monsters / Machete

The US-Mexico border has always inspired filmmakers all genres. For his first feature film, the British Gareth Edwards has thought a NASA probe crashed into the Mexican jungle, releasing particles of earth form extra-Use ground. Six years later the country became a war zone deserted, populated by monstrous creatures. Two Americans will try to reach the border crossing this territory devastated.

The cinema of science fiction is a fertile ground to discuss the current problems faced by both countries, starting with immigration. This is an original form that Gareth Edwards portrayed this phenomenon, taking on aliens who are victims of male violence. If this political aspect is less present than in the recent District 9 , realization, she comes close substantially. Even documentary style, even anchoring contemporary. But contrary to the movie by Neil Blomkamp, Gareth Edwards never yield to the bidding action movie or lambda. For 1:30, it installs a special atmosphere, but when danger threatens constantly caught by history that the two protagonists live. A "love story" rather unusual that makes sense as and when the extra-LAND appear.

If we have enough talent and tricks in his bag, one can make a feature ultra-realistic budget without having Pharaohs. With less than a million dollars in his pocket (in other words a Panouillé for a feature film of this ilk) the director has managed the miracle of creating a world entirely plausible that helps to identify many of the characters. Critters in the background, carcasses of planes and boats, devastated city, Gareth Edwards has managed, through a meticulous minimalism, a play on the outfield and compensate for its lack of an amazing creativity. Caught in this adventure with an uncertain outcome, the viewer is thrown, tossed between toned and intimate film monsters.

Monsters may disappoint fans of the genre, frustrated by the lack of action and rhythm sawtooth. Others will welcome a work that footprint cross roads before ending on a poetic note, a coupling as strange as beautiful. Gareth Edwards is a filmmaker to follow. We only fear that he may one day catch up with the Hollywood juggernaut, like so many others before him.

Robert Rodriguez, he comes to offer his fans what they wanted. After the diptych Grindhouse co-directed with his friend Tarantino, he gives Danny Trejo, eternal second knife that accesses finally to the top of the podium, the role of policeman avenger, a follower of the machete, severed heads and viscera exploited. A guy should not try too hard, being targeted by a corrupt senator Texan, a follower of zero tolerance and quick to loose his dogs when his political projects become upset. Not to mention a vengeful blind flicquette and incorruptible.

We laugh at this spectacle of Grand Guignol assumed after the end. If the vintage side eyeing to Z series of the 70 so beloved Rodriguez, the film also surprising it is, speaks of migration flows at the border between Mexico and the United States, in its way, of course, uncomplicated and unadorned. The security policy takes a nasty hit as everyone Machete sends his enemies. Sometimes jubilant, the film becomes infatuated with a casting unlikely, Steven Seagal as master of swords Don Johnson cop rotten, not to mention De Niro crooked politician.

Too long, repetitive, pleasure the first sequence is decreasing and the accumulated clichés become bored. The film may lack the fragrance of freedom its models, a déconnade a little too controlled to be totally honest. Gore, vulgar parody Machete will not frustrate fans of the genre. But disappoint those who expected a little more.
