A man and a woman in a bed. From the first shots, we guess a couple prohibited. He is married with one little girl of eight years. She is a dentist in Bucharest, single. An adulterous relationship as we have seen a thousand times to the movies. But it is signed by a young Romanian film which is the second feature. And in recent years, we know this film quick to shake up the established codes.
Yet the impression of banality never leaves the film by Radu Muntean. Sequence clean, a slow, cool decor, it does not feel the filmmaker disrupt the norm of the classic psychological drama. But so far remains Bergman, the director comes to creating an odd thriller based on a simple question: Will he leave his wife? The answer lies in a startling sequence in which the duration of rupture planes almost excessive gives an impressive power. The filmmaker does nothing dramatizes the everyday and the subject then turned to his advantage.
But as in Crime, Adjective released some months earlier, it no longer receives the salt that made the specificity of the Romanian cinema . Singularity, the wry humor, the shift we were in such wonderful works Death of Mr. Lazarescu or 12:08 East of Bucharest seem to have disappeared. If the filmmakers still permeate the retina, they now fall into a mold further agreed. The festivals are probably no strangers to this trend, systematically selecting these features in major competitions, so they are not all rise their artistic pretension. A movement that we hoped would bounce back.
